For over 40 years now the Faslane Peace Camp has been bearing witness to the nuclear madness, and serving as a physical base for opposition to the Trident-hosting Naval base.

I lived at Faslane peace camp 1992 for 18 month. Some of the lads had a peacecamp newsletter going, I still have a copy of one, it's so 1990's punk it makes me giggle now. I met so many wonderful people from around the world as well as local MP's and councillors who supported the peace camp, which was nice. At the time I was the youngest independent peace camper (I was 16, my ma lived 40 miles up the road) so when a 14 year old from the local school came to interview us for a school project they offered me, it was pretty awesome being interviewed for a school project by another youngster. Greenpeace were ace, donated us some ribs which we used to go out on the lochs sub spotting and such like with. Some canooed, others went on the ribs and myself and two others swam in front of Trident submarine! We also held a summer festival which various musicians and bands came to. We also supported other wider peace and environmental groups like The Donga Tribe at Twyford down who i travelled down to, by eck their camp was brutal in comparison, just much harsher conditions. One day i was in queue in the bank in Helensburgh & a young bloke behind me in the queue is smiling away at me, i ask what hes smiling at, he says, "You don't remember me do you?" I thought he might have been a friend's brother, he said no, eventually, grinning like a Cheshire cat, he says "I arrested you last saturday!" Haha he looked so different out of uniform, but the civvy police were the friendly ones. We had a little windmill that created a small amount of power on site. We had a little garden area and some of the campers grew some veg. Some campers played musical instruments. Sometimes we argued about nationalism other times about patriarchy, but always in democratic ways and everyone got heard. I Absolutely loved it, great place, lovely folk, good cause.

Very messy and unclean a bio harard almost. Be careful driving past as they like to sit and do there song and dance about nuclear weapons. Would agree its a eyesore. be careful out there don't go near. Very messy would also say paint is "bad for the environment " they have used alot of that they have lots of plastics that is also "bad" for the environment. They are not making a clear point.

What a lovely caring community. Each and every one of them an absolute credit to the cause. They invited us in, fed us, warmed us by their fire and offered us extremely comfortable accommodation.

The facilities left me in awe. The communal space is heated by a state of the art central heating system that relies on a wood stove to heat the boiler and a solar powered pump that pushes the hot water through various radiators in the room. The stove also provides hot water to the kitchen and can be cooked on. There is also fresh water on tap, a flushing toilet and you can even treat yourself to a hot soak in their relaxing bath.

I would recommend a visit if you're interested in anti-nuke, anti-war campaigning, or you want to get an understanding of day to day life on a protest camp, or if you're just passing through and fancy a cup of tea and a friendly chat.

We will definitely be visiting again!

Met a few people there. Really friendly. They gave me a tour of the site. Garden, showers, toilets, kitchen and guest sleeping. Recommend anyone curious to just pop along. Not what I was expecting at all. Very welcoming 🙂
